You have walked past Francis Drake Bowls Club in the park... seen one of our posters...have a friend who plays bowls... and are now wondering how to find out more, maybe even have a go. This page is designed to give you the next steps in starting to bowl.

So why play bowls?

Well apart from fun and friends...

  1. Playing bowls is for everyone. Whatever your physique, whatever your sporting ability, bowls really is the sport for you and will improve your fitness and wellbeing.
  2. Age and gender differences have less impact on a game of bowls than in most sports so it’s a perfect way to spend time and enjoy a bit of friendly competition.
  3. Bowls is not expensive.  You don’t need lots of new kit and we lend you the bowls.

How to get started

Come and see if you enjoy playing bowls.  All you need to do is turn up wearing comfortable clothes and flat-soled shoes or trainers so you don’t damage the grass.

Choose from:

Brockley Fayre open day Saturday 24th June - Free entry

Walk ins. Any time you see us playing casually - so not a match - you are welcome to just come in and any of our experienced members who are free will help you give it a go. There will be a notice on the gate inviting you in when we can do this as the gate has to be closed to keep dogs out.

We can also arrange more structured 1-2-1 or family group coaching sessions at pre booked times. If you would like to do this then please email us. Our usual sessions are Sundays 10-12:30 and Wednesday evenings 6-8 but we can arrange other times to suit.

It isn’t necessary but if you want to find out more in advance, Bowls England explains the rules and basic techniques here https://www.bowlsengland.com/getting-started/

How much does it cost?

Your first taster session is free.  After that you pay as you go, just £5 for a practice roll up session of up to three hours and including the loan of equipment... though of course we have a break for tea and biscuits.

If you eventually decide you want to become a full member it only costs £80 for the year plus £2 green fees per session. The outdoor bowls year is April to September.

Playing Bowls and improving your game

You can join our practice sessions on a pay as you go basis using club supplied bowls and be included in games on Tuesdays and Thursdays 2pm start or join us on Sundays at 10am for coaching.

If we are not involved in a match on Saturday's you may see members rolling up at 2pm and are welcome to come in and chat.

You can use club supplied bowls until you feel confident enough to buy your own.

As your confidence grows you may want to put your name down for friendly matches against local clubs
